I started my pre-reg 4 years ago yesterday - where does time go?
Some #tipsforpreregs:
1 - have fun and enjoy the experience. This is the start of a long and hopefully successful career, so do what you can to enjoy the journey.
Some #tipsforpreregs:
1 - have fun and enjoy the experience. This is the start of a long and hopefully successful career, so do what you can to enjoy the journey.
2 - take time to learn how to walk before trying to run, you might get frustrated at having to do the relatively simple tasks, but getting them right is what will allow you to get the more complex things right later on.
3 - Don’t worry about revision until after Christmas. You will be looking stuff up all day, every day most days at the start, that kind of constant learning will be all you need - studying too much on top of this will increase your cognitive load & adversely affect your learning
4 - if your pre-reg turns out to be not where you see your career, don’t panic. It will be a useful learning experience and it is very time-limited. Learn what you can, reflect on what you didn’t enjoy and you’ll soon be moving on.
5 - depending on what you want to do next, applications may open as early as October (another good reason to leave revision until the new year). Check the relevant websites (if this years applications aren’t open, last years timeline is usually a good estimate) so you can plan.
6- use your R&R time, weekends and A/L are very important, having a real and refreshing break away from any learning is important for cementing your learning, and even more important for your mental health - you can’t look after your patients if you don’t look after yourself.
7 - Use @BPSA, @rpharms and @cppeengland resources for your development, MEP and OTC guides are invaluable. @the_pda offer free membership - great to ensure you have support and protection in the unlikely event something goes upside down.
8 - have a network of tutors/mentors/managers and use them appropriately to aid your development. I was very lucky to have @asafdar1 and @richardjgoodwin among others. Prepare for sessions and have questions, their experience can’t be bought but can be shared.
9 - I’m going to say this again because it’s twice as important as all the others. Have fun and enjoy it!!! You’ve worked hard for at least 4 years to get to here, it can and will be tough, but you have the knowledge, skills and support to smash it! Good luck!
The one I forgot to mention is probably the most important, and not just for pre-regs. If things get tough and you need to talk, or a bit of help, @PharmaSupport is your charity and will be there for you, for students, pre-regs, practising p’cists and retirees. Thank you PS
