MS4s who are doing a peds sub-I, here's some advice for you all to succeed. Fellow #pediatrics colleagues and #Tweetiatrician feel free to weigh in with advice. #MedTwitter
1. Always ask the relevant parts of an H&P.
HPI
ROS
PMH
Surgical
Allergies
Current Medical Conditions
Prenatal history/method of delivery
Complications in the neonatal period
Developmental Milestones
HEADSS Exam (if adolescent)
Family History
Current Meds
Vaccination History
2. Thorough physical examinations
3. Broaden your differential diagnosis with a mnemonic. I like using this mnemonic
4. Keep your assessments short yet highlighting the most important points. What do YOU think of the patient? Do they look sick? Are they stable? Are they improved from prior examinations? Are there any additional diagnoses that you wish to include based on new diagnostics?
5. Before presenting, always write down your patient's problems from most relevant to less pressing. This will help you gather your thoughts and you can take evidence from your labs, history, physical exam to formulate your plan.
7. Uptodate, Harriet Lane (usually can be found in the residents' room), and PediaLink (AAP's list of guidelines) are your friends if you're unsure of something.
8. Understand that it is ok to make mistakes. That's why you have an intern, a senior resident, and your attending to help you out. You're still learning but just be receptive to constructive feedback.
