why is putting idols you don’t stan as your pfp a bad thing? a short thread inspired by fukutomi tsuki
in the kpop community it’s fairly commonplace to use idols, models, actors you don’t stan as “aesthetic icons” a popular example of this is fukutomi tsuki. a member of the predebut girl group mystic girls.
for this thread i’ll be using her as a specific example though these reasons can apply to just about anyone!
1. it devalues their hard work:
tsuki has been training in korea since she was 12 years old. she’s worked a part time job while training in order to afford her expenses. when you use her as an iconic without looking into her as an idol it basically just boils all that work down
2. it fetishizes asian women
yes! it actually is fetishization when you use a random picture of an asian girl you don’t know anything about for the “aesthetic” it perpeuates an image of them as objects without actually appreciating them as people.
3. several of the women have expressed discomfort with it.
how would you feel (especially in the case of “weibo girls”) if you found out a bunch of random people were using your pictures without your consent? not great right? please be mindful of their wishes.
