my interpretation of something great and why i think it is one of one direction's saddest songs; a thread
this thread is going to talk about larry so if you have an issue with that, please keep scrolling. also this is my personal interpretation of the song so you probably will have different opinions. anyways let's continue.
as we know, something great was written by harry. i'm going to go through the lyrics in order and look at them from his pov.
in the beginning, harry is imagining the day where he and this person can finally be together: "one day you'll come into my world and say it all."
harry talks about his longing to be together with this person because he is tired of imagining it: "i want you here with me, like how I pictured it, so i don't have to keep imagining."
i interpret the lyric "is it too much to ask for something great?" as him saying how he doesn't think that wanting to be with this person is as big of deal as everyone else makes it out to be. he just wants to be with this person plain and simple.
one of the lyrics that points to this song being about larry is "the script was written and i could not change a thing." as we know, many artists have spoke out about managements and record labels forcing them to hide their sexuality. i am in no way labelling the boys, but (1)
(2) this part implies that they were secretly together and there was a contract of some sort that barred the boys from revealing their relationship. if the boys were single to the public eye, management was able to set up fake pr relationships to help the band gain publicity.
(3) this part could also be talking about the fake relationships/publicity stunts the boys had to agree too. management organized these relationships and probably didn't give the boys much of a choice so there was nothing they could really do about it.
the second part of this lyric is "i want to rip it all to shreds and start again." harry is saying he wishes they could just start over because this time they wouldn't agree to the contract and they could be together publicly.
one of the most telling parts of the meaning behind this song is louis' solo at the end. he sings "you're all I want, so much it's hurting" twice, right after harry once again sings "i want you here with me, like how i pictured it. is it too much to ask for something great?" (1)
(2) louis' solo seems to be him responding to what harry has been saying throughout the entire song. he is telling harry how much he wants to be with him too.
imagine having to hide your entire relationship from the public and having to watch them date other people. you can't show any affection and have to act like you are just friends when in the reality that person is the person you are in love and is literally one of your (1)
(2) favorite people in the entire world.
whether or not you believe this song is about larry, you can't deny how heartbreaking this song's lyrics really are. anyways, thank you for reading and let me know if you agree!! <3
