Victoria, home to the capital, #Melbourne, is under strict lockdown to try to stop the spread of #COVID19. A stay-at-home order with few exemptions and a nighttime curfew are among the new restrictions as they fight a surge in cases after staving off the worst initially.
In contrast, Minnesota, which has only seen an upward trajectory in new cases daily - no staving off the worst - is pretty much the Wild West with indoor dining & bars open, a mask mandate ignored outside the metros. Only yesterday were indoor bars in Minneapolis ordered closed.
Australians are just as ruggedly individualistic as Americans - and they’re doing what it takes. We never really locked down - and now we’re paying the price across the country as we struggle to open schools and watch our economy tank. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/americas-covid-19-economy-struggles-as-cases-climb">https://www.pbs.org/newshour/...
Victoria’s new restrictions include a curfew from 8pm-5am, one hour of outdoor exercise per day, no more than 2 in a outing; all schools remote; only leave home for food/supplies, medical care or work if it can’t be done remote; masks required outside the home.
And as many people have pointed out, this is possible because the Australian government recognizes the hardship this sacrifice entails and is providing financial and other assistance to help its citizens through this.
Yep, I put in Australia total numbers above. Should say 11,500 cases and 123 deaths to date in Victoria. Test number at least right. Point remains the same though. Thanks @UghSoUnoriginal and @ColinDrescher #RankAmateurAtTwitter
