I just watched German news about their protest yesterday and if there ever was a perfect case study on how the far right recruits, it’s this moment in Germany. They’ve managed to get the Birkenstock Moms & tree people to walk right next to full blown Nazis. It is mind blowing...
...and unlike here in the US where you can often blame anti-science opinions on a lack of education, Fox News and a large Evangelist cult, this is not the case in Germany. There was a large number of Germans present who went to good schools and aren’t religious.
And when I say “case study” I really hope someone listens and looks into this. I think understanding what happened there can help everybody else in the world fight populism
I wish German News had eng. subtitles because hosts/experts are very matter of fact, unemotional & one of them just asked a populism expert what they are protesting, the expert answered: “Unfortunately their objections are not based on a reality that exists”...I nearly lost it
I just went down the rabbit hole of one of those lunatics. Loud objections to being called a Nazi followed vile racist anti-refugees tweets, followed by RTs of Trump, followed by QAnon tweets, followed by many links to YouTube COVID deniers, followed by use of “Lügenpresse“
I’m legit nauseous now. I always hoped Germany would never again let this stuff spread, but this is a big problem
