Addicts can recover. Let them.

Convicts can rehabilitate. Let them.

People can overcome their pasts and be the wonderful people they are capable of. Don't try to destroy their lives after they put in all that work to change. The only bad person in that scenario is you.
Crime is overwhelmingly caused by poverty and trauma in childhood. People in these situations have no resources and no tools to learn how to function healthily at all - let alone as productive members of society. Our judicial system is not set up to help people learn how, either.
It is harder to use prison to move on from the past than it is to keep going back. Easy access to drugs. Segregation. More trauma.

It takes monumental intention to stop re-offending.

Our society is not built to help the most vulnerable, it's built to enslave them.
