On Dec 20, 2016, “I went out for some exercise. I walked 8 miles to Auburndale and back. (Yes, I like to walk) I didn’t have a single issue as a pedestrian - until I got to Hollis Hills. 2/
Around 5:20 PM, as I was crossing from the northwest corner of 82nd Ave & Bell Blvd towards the southwest corner, a white conversion van, made a sharp turn at speed turning from Northbound Bell Blvd to Westbound 82nd Ave. He came within 3 feet of me. 3/
Although he turned recklessly at speed, he stopped & rolled down his window to tell me that my clothing wasn’t bright enough — I was wearing a bright red jacket. I yelled at him, “you’d see people if you would slow the fuck down!” He then sped off. 4/
Unfortunately, mine isn’t an isolated incident. I’ve been following incidents on Bell Blvd for a while 5/
According to CrashMapper since 2017, 20 pedestrians and 2 cyclists have been injured and 2 pedestrians killed on Bell Blvd between Northern and Spencer. Remarkably, both pedestrians were killed within days of one another at the beginning of this year. 6/
On February 6, 2020, 64-year-old Deborah Scherer was hit and killed while crossing Bell Blvd near 75th Avenue. https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2020/02/13/queens-pedestrian-is-killed-on-bell-blvd-driver-uncharged/ 7/
On February 23, 2020, 88-year-old Dolores Soho was hit and killed at 48th Ave and Bell. She had survived cellulitis, the flu, a heart attack, and breast cancer but couldn’t survive crossing a @NYC_DOT designed street. https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-elderly-woman-struck-van-queens-20200224-7rrhzovxljd5lms7dkfbdpusfe-story.html 8/
You might hear, 'Bell Blvd' and assume the entire street looks like the strip near the LIRR station. But for most of its length Bell Blvd is a relatively wide street through residential neighborhoods. without a lot of traffic... a recipe for speeding. 9/
Last nights crash where a driver hit a parked car with enough force to propel both cars past the sidewalk into a front yard clearly involved speed. https://twitter.com/joby_jacob/status/1289741618690441216?s=20 /10
To my knowledge, despite multiple injuries, deaths, and requests from both residents and elected officials CB11 hasn’t discussed safety on Bell Blvd EVEN ONCE.
