THREAD: Spent last night and this morning watching some clips and a match of Sean McGurk. The Wigan winger/number 10 has been linked with Leeds, with both Brighton and Spurs also very keen. #LUFC
To start of with, this will only be a brief overview as the footage is limited and ideally I'd like to see more of him. If any deal was to happen, I'd look at doing a more in depth article down the line once I've seen him play more for our 23's.
To start of with, he's mainly played on the right wing or as a number 10 for Wigan's under 18's and under 23's. He's not a traditional winger who stays out wide and tends to play in the half space and look to do damage there.
The most impressive thing for me is his goal scoring record. In 25 games for Wigans under 18's, he's scored 15 goals and has also scored 2 in 3 for their 23's. They would be brilliant numbers for a striker, never mind a midfield player.
He is very comfortable on either foot. He can also create goals as well, as the example below shows. He makes a well timed run after being involved in the initial build up phase, before crossing for his team mate to tap in.
Along with the knack for being in the right place at the right time, which is one of the reasons why he's scored so much, he's also got great feet. He's at his most dangerous in and around the box.
Running through one of his goals this season, to start of with I wanted to point out his intelligence to look where the opposition full back is at the start of this move.
He carries on his run before producing great feet and composure to beat a couple of players before sliding it past the keeper. This particular goal is a good summary of the sort of player he is. Busy and comes alive in the box.
Some areas for improvement. Physically he struggles, he's not the tallest and only has a sleight build. Below is a good example, he beats his man initially with a burst of pace but as soon as there is physical contact, he loses the ball.
Due to his physical disadvantages, long term I'd expect his future to be in the number 10 role. Somewhere he can pick up spaces and make runs into the box. Depending on the teams system, he could easily get lost out wide.
Anyway, like I said at the start, I do normally like to see a lot more footage before making a judgement, but seen as its just a rumour at the moment, this thread should give you a good idea of the sort of player McGurk is. He's only 17 and I think he be a good signing.
He's a few years behind Gelhardt in terms of development and would likely come into our 23's set up and look to develop there for a season. If you enjoyed the thread, all retweets are appreciated, road to 8,000 followers before the season starts is on! #LUFC
