Bros, I saw this tweet before heading out for my morning run. It stayed on my mind till I got back and that's the reason why I feel compelled to respond.
First of all, there's nothing extraordinarily different about Nigerians when it comes to dishonesty, Pilfering or Fraud. https://twitter.com/Millishield/status/1289674963331330049
For every Naija Businessman or Businesswoman that complain about staff stealing or whatever; I'll show you a businessperson that has NOT done the basic minimum in running a business. A lot of Naija Business people have a "vibes and inshallah" approach to running a business...
and they complain when Naija people they have hired shaft them. I consulted for a businesswoman some years ago. She owned a number of supermarkets across Lagos. She was on the verge of opening another when she told me about her concerns. She said the people she hired are stealing
her blind. I offered to help her do a top down review of her supermarket chain. I started from staff records. From the get go, I noted she kept really poor records of her staff; files were maintained by her undergrad daughter. From review of the staff files, I saw that she made..
her staff get two guarantors before hiring them. You know what I did? I started calling the so called Guarantors to confirm whether they indeed executed the Guarantor Forms. Guess what? One of the Guarantors of the chap in charge of Madam's warehouse, a Bank AGM, totally disowned
the form and the chap. He claimed the chap was his Wife's younger bro and they haven't heard from him in about two years. Man claimed dude stole his car and that he is surprised he is not in kirikiri. This chap was introduced to Madam by one of supermarket floor managers...
80% of her staff forged their Guarantors form and Madam did not even have a process of vetting her hires. There were other issues; poor cash/bank reconciliation by "oga Accountant", poor daily balancing of her stores, shambolic inventory operations to name a few. Diesel nko...
Jesu Oba iye...that was the worst. Nigerians and Diesel; match made in Hell.
By the time I sent Madam a PowerPoint presentation of my findings and recommendations she almost landed in the Hospital with High BP.
What were the things were did to address the issues...the basics
separation of duties and maker/checker protocols alone cut down Pilfering by as much as 60%. After she couldn't convince me to come on board, I help her recruit and train a Control/Audit staff. I designed the chap's KPI and tied it to his annual bonus. After all said...
and done, Madam said it felt as if she had been running a charity org rather than a business.
So Bros, "do the needful". Put structure & processes in place and you will see that Nigerians are not extra. Like other people around the world; naija go chop you if you dull yourself
