The Sixers took 93 shots as a team, and only 25 were 3s. I don’t think people understand how absurdly low that is for 2020 basketball. The starting backcourt (Shake/JRich) combined to take 2 in 49 min. That’s crazy. Can’t win at a high level with that low of a team 3pt rate.
From the last 2 days (3pt attempts/total shots):
Phi-25/93 26%
Ind-34/95 36%
Mia-29/72 40%
Den-35/89 39%
Uta-31/87 35%
OKC-26/77 34%
NO-30/85 35%
LAC-47/87 54%
Hou-48/101 48%
Dal-49/105 47%
Sac-38/95 40%
SA-25/90 28%
Bos-37/91 41%
Mil-41/83 49%
Mem-41/93 44%
Por-30/91 33%
To recap, the Sixers had only 26% of their shot attempts from 3. The median of the league over the last 2 days was 40% of their shots from 3. The Sixers are working from a significant math disadvantage with shot selection. Offense has way too many post-ups and mid-range hunting
We know Ben won’t shoot them, which you can live with considering he generates so many 3pt looks for others. I wish Embiid would shoot more 3s, but he likes to post up and he’s the best in the NBA at it. Taking those as givens, everyone else they play with need to be 3pt gunners.
Also, gunners doesn’t mean snipers. Supporting cast willing to shoot a high volume of 3s at league-average or slightly below percentage is more valuable than pump-faking out of 3s, floating into the midrange, and posting up. Especially if those players add value in other areas.
