PSA.. it's not a good idea for long term health to use displays that utilise PWM/have flickering backlights.
Since March, I have been using a Samsung 42" TV (Q60R) as my main display for work, gaming, everything really. It uses PWM (so it's not flicker free). (1/8)
I've had it for more than a year now, and it is an absolutely fantastic display, one of the best you can get in that size. For the past week now, I started having a heavy feeling in the head, that would sometimes worsen to be a headache. (2/8)
I took medication which helped, by suppressing it. I started taking longer breaks than usual, took some days off work as well, but overall there wasn't much improvement. Until I recollected that headaches/migraines due to PWM might be the factor. (Google 'PWM headache') (3/8)
For some reason, when buying this TV, I never factored PWM into my decision. I stopped using the TV altogether, and started using the laptop display + iPad in sidecar mode. Until now the laptop was permanently in clamshell mode. (4/8)
It's been just two days, and not only have the headaches stopped completely, the forehead feeling has almost gone away.. so I'm pretty sure what the cause was... prolonged exposure to a PWM display. My point is, try hard to get a flicker free display! (5/8)
Here's me in March 2017 saying the TV using PWM could be a reason (OG tweet isn't visible, but I'm going to assume it was a headache issue).. and I didn't heed my own advice! https://twitter.com/rushvora/status/845021722625556480 (6/8)
I'm going to have to get an external display for multiple reasons, productivity, gaming (PS4 & Switch display), etc. Pretty much decided on the LG 27UK650, I had this when I was in the US, and it still seems to be one of the best options now. (7/8)
FWIW, monitors are usually flicker free. I say usually, because you still have to make sure of it. So yes.. if you have a display that uses PWM (a LOT of TVs do)... might not be a good idea to use it as a monitor, or continuously for an extended period. (8/8)
