I'd a great chat with @RuthbMax and @shanedadaly last night about how Ireland is a place where we run around trying to fix symptoms of trauma, instead of looking at the root causes and allowing victims to talk about what has happened to them.
We see it time and time again, people present with anxiety, depression, addiction, PTSD, and they get given medication, a couple of counselling session and told to go away. Nobody asks or wants to know why they are suffering. If they do reveal the root cause gets ignored anyway.
We would have a much healthier society if we took a deeper look at root causes and allowed people to openly say what has happened to them, and give them and their families the supports needed to get over that root cause. PTSD is treatable AND curable, if it is not ignored
Not addressing root causes is another part of shame culture. Victims don't feel listened to, they feel like they've done something wrong or that they deserved what happened. We need to all do better with this. Ireland is sick with trauma and nobody wants to cure it.
Brilliant Ted Talk here with the background medical effects of childhood trauma. Thanks to @TommyNGahan for the link
