I& #39;d be very grateful for your thoughts on my hypothesis of the current state + upcoming future of Western society. I have a VERY pessimistic view of the short - medium term 1/8
We& #39;ve lost our way as a society.

I call this phenomenon "moral decadence". Meaning that in Western society we& #39;ve largely run out of truly essential things to worry about (e.g. threats to financial and physical safety that could kill / deeply harm us) and this has... 2/8
...caused two main types of problems:

1. We are obsessively moralising over certain matters in a ridiculous, overblown, uncritical and hypersensitive way (racism, climate change, gender issues, causing offence, etc) 3/8
2. We have completely lost perspective when it comes to risk and are significantly reducing the quality and richness of life to disproportionately increase safety. We were doing this before the pandemic but Covid-19 has put a booster rocket on our excessive safety trajectory 4/8
I believe things will degenerate much further, probably for years. My current most likely option is that there will then be an angry backlash, ranging somewhere from voting in extremist right wing governments to full-blown violent revolution. 5/8
If that does happen then I believe there will be several years more bad times of that over-correction before we settle into a relatively enlightened period (e.g. post World War II up to somewhere in the early 2000s, where it really started to go wrong). 6/8
I think the (1) degeneration and (2) over-correction will be similar in scope and timescale (though thankfully not deaths) of (1) The Great Depression and (2) World War II.
7/8
And similar in genesis, in that World War II was essentially a reaction to the Great Depression, which was also mostly self-inflicted.

Moral decadence may work itself out more quickly and less messily but as things stand I think this is roughly the direction we’re headed 8/8
