As India and China hold their fifth corps commander meeting at Moldo today, a thread reviewing the current situation on the LAC in Ladakh. This is based on the reporting done by @manaman_chhina @Krishn_ and me since early May in @IndianExpress 👇
90 days on. PM has visited Ladakh, so has the defence minister. Foreign Minister has spoken to his Chinese counterpart. NSA has had meetings and calls with his Chinese Special Representative counterpart. WMCC meets, Corps Commander meets, Indian Ambassador to Beijing has met. 1/n
Despite all this from India, the Chinese have not even disengaged fully, let alone start de-escalation. Even at PP-14 where disengagement has happened, PLA has made a blacktop road to the spot where India lost 20 men. PLA is 1.5 km away and can return to the place in minutes. 2/n
At PP-17A in Gogra, the PLA and Indian troops have not disengaged. At Pangong, the Chinese continue to sit on the ridge line on Finger 4 on the northern bank. In Depsang plains up north, the Indians continue to be denied access to five patrolling points 3/n
All the disengagement that has taken place so far has been mutual, i.e., both sides have stepped back equally, including on the north bank of Pangong. The Chinese stepped back to Finger 5 and Indians to their Dhan Singh Thapa post. Same at PP-14 and PP-15. 4/n
As India knows very well from the Doklam experience, even a full disengagement by itself means zilch. In Doklam, both sides stepped back by equal distance. But the Chinese stayed there, constructed huge new military infrastructure and have a full deployment in the area now. 5/n
The Chinese Ambassador's statement on Pangong and the LAC have been very rigid and harsh. As General VP Malik said, it is hard to imagine what the Corps Commanders can achieve when the Chinese side has such a public stance about its deployment on the LAC in Pangong. 6/n
Depsang plains, where the Chinese are stopping Indian troops at a place 18 km inside the LAC, is still not on the agenda. The unusual silence about Depsang, giving it the lowest priority when it is strategically the most important of the areas, is hard to comprehend. 7/n
[n/n] The meeting between the Indian Corps Commander and his PLA counterpart today takes place in such an environment, where expectations are not high, mood is sombre and the Indians are prepared for the long haul and winter deployment of additional troops on the LAC in Ladakh.
