I assume this is a joke, but IMHO, Republicans are genuinely in BIG trouble when kids who are now 10-16—who lack any pre-Trump context re: the GOP—become voters. Not because of TikTok; because they’re paying attention. They see everything that’s happening. And they won’t forget. https://twitter.com/kathrynw5/status/1289400794584739840
There’s a tendency among adults to scoff at this, because as kids, they & their friends didn’t care about politics. But it’s different now. Politics is everywhere, and kids consume info with fewer filters. And that was even before COVID, the central event of Gen Z’s lives to date
My 12-year-old daughter starts more conversations about politics with me these days than I do with her. Usually triggered by a meme she saw, or something a Trump troll said in a Roblox game, or a dumb political argument someone made on her Animal Crossing subreddit, or whatever.
You think tweens & teens don’t have strong, deeply felt opinions about Black Lives Matter? About misogyny, homophobia, and cruelty toward immigrants? About the mishandling of the virus that has completely upended their lives just as much as it’s upended ours, if not moreso?
Their political opinions won’t somehow revert to a blank slate when they turn 18. They’ll remember what’s happening now — and who’s responsible for it. Even if they lack a sophisticated understanding of policy, the basic moral gist is pretty simple, and pretty damning for the GOP
