Thread on Iraq invasion of Kuwait
1- My first claim to fame was when I was a grad student doing research work on the role of oil in Iraq's economic development and Saddam Hussein invaded kuwait by the time I was finishing my work.

2- The media was scrambling for experts. There were few. Suddenly, I am an expert! While I was prepared research-wise, I have never been face to face with the media.
3- Regardless of all kinds of theories that explain the motivation of Saddam Hussein to invade Kuwait, one thing was clear to me: Iraq's economy was in total collapse with the possibility of massive food shortages (and a military coup)
4- Now 30 years later, so many questions remained unanswered, giving rise to all kinds of conspiracy theories. Oil-wise, there are evidence to show that the invasion was preplanned three years in advance. But that fits with conspiracy theories too.
5- Now 30 years later, there are so many lies on all sides regarding the invasion and later the Gulf war that most people do not know about. CNN and Newsweek in particular fooled the American people and the rest of the world. Will talk about it when we talk about the Gulf War.
6- Why did Saddam say in 2002 that all US oil contracts before 1990 were still valid? What contracts? What happened to GM's plant that was supposed to produce Oldsmobils by 1990? What happened to consortium of 100 US companies that started building factories in the late 1980s?
7- There are many so many lessons for legal experts, economists, military strategists, and social scientist to learn from the invasion and the war that followed. Unfortunately, I am afraid we will never know the truth.

and probably, we cannot handle the truth!
8- Given that development, I continued working on Iraq issues since then.

This is from 1992 that I still have in my drawer: 👇
