Seeing some “but how do I find folks who can help my con be better?” and look. I’m glad y’all are asking, really, but this is important: It is not an honor for folks to be approached to help a Worldcon—*it’s the concom who should be honored marginalized folks are willing to help*
Realize this: marginalized folks are WELL AWARE that if we decide to help we’re walking into a multidimensional MINEFIELD of microaggressions & outright hostility bc our very presence threatens the status quo. We don’t give a shit abt the institution—we do care abt people.
Future Worldcons need to reckon w/who they’ve been prioritizing, and who they’ve been willing to lose. Bc any real attempt at change is going to piss off some influential folks who’ve become used to being venerated & catered to. And that’s what you’re asking us to walk into.
Unless you are absolutely willing to make difficult decisions that are going to piss off “traditional” fandom, unless you’re willing to follow our lead & support us, no amount of help we give you will be worth a damn. We’re not here to be your rubber stamps or tokens.
Anything marginalized folks are willing to give any Worldcon is an undeserved fucking gift. I hope future Worldcons are capable of recognizing how precious that gift will be should any individuals & communities choose to give it. Right now, I’m extremely skeptical they will.
