I've covered sports for 26 years. I've loved doing so. And with that experience, I want to share this lesson with college athletes, young pro athletes: The leagues don't care about you. The conferences don't care about you. The coaches (with rare exception) don't care about you 1
You are chattel to them. A piece of meat. A uniform to fill. When that coach comes to your home, and says he loves his players and sees them as people, not just athletes, he's lying to you. He's giving you a line. When he tells you he'll be at [X] school forever, he's 2
lying to you. The SEC, for example, doesn't care about athletes getting sick. Its overlords care about lost profits, empty stadiums, dead air time. You are a screw or a bolt or a lug-nut. Nothing more. To these guys, there are another 10,000 of you. 3
Back in the day, when southern football programs began recruiting African-American athletes, they reassured fans and boosters that you were just there to carry the ball. You certainly wouldn't date their daughters or move into their neighborhoods. That same way of thinking 4
still exists today. You're nothing. When a coach says he loves you—what he loves is what you're bringing him. A big home. Two BMWs. A swoosh on the lapel. So now, with COVID, they want you to play because they're greedy and your health is of minimal importance 5
They need packed stadiums to justify existence. They need big wins on national TV. And if you get sick, or you get your mom or dad or grandma or grandpa sick, they'll say some kind words, maybe even make a hospital visit—then never, ever look back 6.
Conclusion: Do NOT let these people decide what's best for you, your teammates, your families. They do not have your interests at heart. And never will. #
