Based on social systems, a singularity can be defined as a context (event) in which a small change causes a large effect.
We know based on what we see today that several people’s very existence has shaken history to its core, and the effects of their actions are felt even now.

Likewise, within the literary space where manga resides, there are numerous figures that hold insurmountable sway over the way the world turns. Some call them leaders. Villains. Plot devices. But there’s no doubt that the general term we’ve given them, is “overpowered”.
Today I’ll be looking at two “singularities” who are very similar, and yet very different at the same time.
In their verses, they’re behemoths of strength, social influence, and magnets for respect, whether from allies or enemies.
Sinbad and Satoru Gojo.

Sinbad and Satoru Gojo.
These two are prominent figures in their respectives series, despite not being the main character, and I believe they’re some of the best examples of the “overpowered character” trope we have witnessed in the shonen medium. Today, I’ll be discussing why I believe so.
Needless to say there will be spoilers for both Magi and Jujutsu Kaisen in this thread. If you are not caught up, I’d advise you do so.
Starting off with the High King of the Seven Seas, Sinbad from Magi: the Labyrinth of Magic.

Sinbads character is monikered “the first class singularity”. And rightly so. Upon his birth, the most talented magicians in the world felt a shift in the flow of magic.
This shift heralded the coming of a being that would shake the very foundation of the world to its core.

As a child Sinbad had a very modest yet eventful upbringing. From infanthood to becoming a young man, there were several instances where sinbad was noted to have the mind boggling ability to decide his own fate on a mere whim.
This was later confirmed to be a fact.
This was later confirmed to be a fact.
As prophesied by one of the four Magi of the world, Sinbad was to go on and become a king who would shape not just his home nation, but the entire world.
Sinbad quickly rose from grass to grace, becoming the first person to ever clear a dungeon, and claim a Djinn in the world.

Dungeons in Magi are mystical pockets of space that transport whoever enters to the domain of the ruler (Djinn) of said dimension.
Thousands of highly trained soldiers had made their way in and never came out. Yet all it took was one 14 year old boy to change history forever.

After this, Sinbad leaves his war torn homeland to begin his epic tale. He befriends many companions of notable talents, namely famous assassins, prodigious magicians, and even estranged royal family members.
He eventually creates his own country, and makes powerful allies.

Along the way, Sinbad goes on to conquer 6 more dungeons, giving him a total of 7 Djinns, the highest number for a single person to ever wield, with the second highest number being 3.
His country of Sindria ends up becoming the hub to the biggest economic power in the world.

And to top it all off, though briefly, Sinbad stood atop the universe as the one in charge of the sacred palace. In other words, the god of the Magi verse.
Now that we know what this guy is all about, why is he different from all the other overpowered characters out there ?

Firstly, he has a solid foundation. Sinbad was raised dirt poor in a war torn country.
This enabled him to be humble and see the best and worst sides of life right from his times as a child.
Even after encountering fame and wealth, he made mistakes. One of which ..

Ended up making him lose the country he had dedicated his life to. You’d think this, coupled with his other hardships in life, would send him down the wrong path, but no.
What separates Sinbad from everyone else ? He literally had destiny by his side.
He feared no hardships..

Because to him, they were nothing more than stepping stones.
This trait of Sinbad allows him to forge his own fate with his hands, because he understands that everything is part of the process.
In this, he is powerful not only physically and socially, but also spiritually.

From what we’ve seen, Sinbad was a force of change that directly impacted the way the world of Magi operated several times over, and he did so with his own interests in mind. His ambitions were lofty, and yet quite different from our next contender.
The six-eyes, Satoru Gojo.

As I mentioned before, these two are very similar.

He was already taking on cases thought to be far above his level.
His strength was completely unprecedented, and so was his arrogance. His peers noted this too.
As with Sinbad, he encountered an event that changed his life forever, cementing him as the strongest

Gifted with the limitless cursed technique and six eyes, Gojo possesses the ability to manipulate cursed energy at an atomic level, bending space at his will, and also perception abilities that allow him to see things beyond standard human reasoning.
Simply put: he’s strong.

But unlike Sinbad who viewed his strength as a reason for him to change the world, Gojo understood that his strength held a different yet similar meaning

Cursed spirits and other powers running amok unchecked. Gojo understands all of this is life moving forward, and wishes to respond in kind by nurturing the future generation that will eventually overtake him.
He spares no mercy to those that would get in his way, friend or foe.

These two are very similar in the fact that their backgrounds involve trials that were seemingly above them at first, but in the greater scheme of things, were a necessary hurdle.

Undoubtedly a major force in both of their series, and I respect both Shinobu and Gege sensei dearly for gifting us such compelling characters.
I’m a bit rusty so I hope y’all will excuse the lack of polish on this one.
As always, thanks for reading
