<Thread> I was not a fan of @JoeBiden. I favored @BernieSanders and @ewarren, who had specific plans for fundamental change, esp. in national security. But Biden has proved to be a strong, effective candidate. He’s united the party and adopted many, vital progressive policies. 1/
Discussions - even arguments - I had with my colleagues during the primaries revolved around how progressive policies could expand and mobilize the base vs. positioning on issues so as to win over Trump voters. It looks like Biden can do both. 2/
I see his strong appeal to moderate voters and the white working class. He’s cut Trump’s advantage there in half - while keeping and even improving on Clinton’s support among non-white voters and women and young voters. 3/ https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.usnews.com/news/elections/articles/2020-07-15/new-support-for-joe-biden-could-give-him-a-win-over-trump-poll%3fcontext=amp">https://www.google.com/amp/s/www...
Some of this lead is because the sexist and racist attacks the GOP used against Obama and Clinton don’t work against Biden. All of Trump’s attacks and smears have bounced off Biden. But Biden is also running a first-class campaign with a united party. 4/ https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/613402/">https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp...
That unity is based on genuine openness to the progressive wing. Biden’s willing to think big on core issues like climate change, green jobs and health care and to bring in key Warren & Sanders staff and allies to help shape policy and the campaign. 5/ https://www.motherjones.com/2020-elections/2020/05/joe-biden-bernie-sanders-unity-task-force/">https://www.motherjones.com/2020-elec...
There’s a long road to travel in the next 3 months, and many issues to push on, like the persistence of corporate influence among Biden advisors. Picking a progressive black woman as his VP would help on multiple fronts, including these issues. 6/ https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/08/01/us/politics/biden-lobbyist-ties.amp.html">https://www.google.com/amp/s/www...
I don’t think I was wrong to back other candidates, but I must say my friends @JBWolfsthal, @bpmckeon64, @AmbassadorRice and others were right in their assessment of Biden’s strengths and their theory of victory.
I will do all I can, every day, to elect @JoeBiden president.
