I realize that asking @AmOrnith to change bird names and @audubonsociety to think about changing theirs is a big ask, might seem outlandish or audacious. If we can’t have serious conversations about this kind of move, though, what are we saying about ourselves as a community?
Inclusion is this mythical word we throw around right now. Its a goal, but it’s far off if we can’t get through a week without a group like @InsideMbga (great follow btw) popping up. @audubonsociety is making a big statement with their re-evaluation of their history.
It’s an admirable move, but not bold enough. @ABCbirds seems to be on the right track, but isn’t offering bold moves yet either. Which organization is going to step up and go big? There’s been a lot of talking and literally no action from anyone we donate money to.
@BirdNames4Birds is all volunteers working outside of their daily duties to make a tangible change. The names we speak and read, 150 of them in North America alone, which are doing nothing but allowing racism, bigotry, misogyny, and colonialism to persist, need to go.
@ABCbirds @AmOrnith @audubonsociety and so many other orgs need to do better for greater bird community. #birdnamesforbirds is great place to start, but won’t be the end.
