When scheduling for online classes opened in our district this week, we found many electives and basics like language, honors classes & even computer programming were not being offered online.

It was as if the high school was punishing kids who chose distance learning.

(2) My son has a close group of friends who have been together since fourth grade and the moms stay in touch.

Initially in despair at the limited online offerings, all of the other parents had resigned themselves to sending their kids back to school despite the danger.
(3) Since those initial conversations and perhaps as a result of my incessant badgering and warnings, two other parents have opted to do distance learning.

We’ve started to organize a coalition and realized if we pooled our knowledge, we might be able to bridge the learning gaps
(4) One of us has a PhD in Chinese language and speaks German. One has a degree in advanced sciences. I have a teaching degree and experience teaching writing and literature online.

We have spouses with experience in engineering, science, and math.
(5) We’ll find a way to make this work. But I remain deeply discouraged by our district’s failure to invest in distance learning.

As a certified educator with distance curriculum design experience, I offered to provide free seminars to our district. They refused the help.
(6) Schools have had months to plan for this and to make distance learning work. They appear to have spent that time sitting on their hands hoping for the best.

And in the meantime it’s our kids who will get short changed.
