As I am about to begin my third year FT as a law professor, having transitioned from a long career in movement lawyering and organizing, I wrote down a few things to help me remain focused on my goals.
I would like to learn from activist-scholars who are paving ways to engage their academic work with social movements, ideally in the global South, who embed themselves in movements, and see themselves/their labor as part of it.
Who are those who meet this description?
I aspire to publish provocative, envelope pushing, non-traditional pieces, even if that may not count for "tenure" because I really don't have time to wait for "after tenure" to do the work that I want to do now.
I aspire to present my research/scholarship in creative ways and forms typically unseen to challenge what is deemed scholarship, theoretical, and in ways that is accessible to social movements that I am part of.
I would like the opportunity to teach/work with students who are equally invested in exploring the relationships between law and social justice as a practice/discipline and long term commitment, and who see themselves as creators and builders of just society
I would like to seek out and surround myself with people who share my values of radical authenticity, courageous conversations, mass based collective organizing, and bold imagining of building a beloved community.
