Thread #4 – 1/n Raagam for the week: Naattai / Chalanaattai / Gambeeranaattai – A set of ‘happy’ raagams, that have been explored by many music directors. The classical touch of Naattai will be evident in almost all songs. https://twitter.com/rgchennai/status/1287030241756471296
/n Disclaimer :) https://twitter.com/rgchennai/status/1281893304070582272?s=20
/n Naatai is an auspicious raagam, and one of the few used to begin concerts. KB here uses Naattai and a song on Lord Vinayaga to begin his movie (and the concert on screen) about a Carnatic vocalist – so why not start the thread with the same :)
/n The Pancharatna Kritis composed by Shri Thyagaraja begin with Naattai too. Harris blends this melody beautifully with Jagadananda Karaka as Shankar recreates the recital of the kriti at Thiruvaiyaaru.
/n Singaravelan always gets appreciated for the comedy and dialogues. But does the music get the love it deserves? நீதானே நான் பாடும் சுகமான ஆகாசவாணி!
/n While the charanams deviate from the raaga a wee bit, the Pallavi surely deserves a mention in the list of songs in Naattai. And hey, a thread without Deva? – never :)
/n ARR beautifully explores Naattai and nails it with the generous use of tabla in this gem of a song! நறுமுகையே நறுமுகையே நீ ஒரு நாழிகை நில்லாய்! Hello Mister Edhir Katchi from Iruvar is 'based' on Naattai as well.
/n My favorite from the thread. SPB at his very best – the typical laugh, the undying energy in the voice, the breathless stretches, and what to even say about Raja’s composition! இனி வரும் முனிவரும் தடு..மாறும்..கனிமரம்!
/n Arguably the best fusion in Naattai and once again, it is Vidyasagar delivering it :) [Remember Sudum Nilavu - Reetigowlai] When was the last time you listened to this one? :)
/n Another Prabhu Deva number in Naattai. We all miss this amazing singer in Swarnalatha, don’t we? :(
/n The next two songs are in Raag Jog in Hindustani which is extremely close to Naattai, though there are nuances/differences. But I am including them in the thread because Jog is the closest we will get to, from Naattai.
/n I am truly lost for words about this song – including the Hindi version here (playlist in the thread below has both Hindi and Tamizh), just enjoy ARR scaling across octaves and moods effortlessly!
/n Closing this thread – I know this is supposed to be a Tamizh songs thread, but I couldn’t skip this one, because this movie and this song specifically are very close to heart!
/n Oh wait, we started with Mahaganapathim, so let's close it actually with Chennai Sentamizh :)
/n Sorry about the delay in putting this up :) Hope this brightens up your Saturday nights / Sunday mornings! @SunOfGan @iShO_o @jiljilramamani
