1st August, 1846 is the raising day of The Sikh Regiment.

The 1st battalion of The Sikh Regiment was the Commonwealth's most decorated battalion & to this day Sikh regiment remains one of the most decorated in Indian Army.

The honor of the first unit going into combat on behalf of Independent India was bestowed on 1st SIKH, which made the historic airlift to save Srinagar.
In 1965, Indo Pakistan war Lieutenant General Harbakhsh Singh, GOC, Western Command, disobeyed the then army chief and took on a superior Pakistani armoured column thus saving Punjab & India from falling. He belonged to 5 Sikh.

"Alas! A handful of Sikhs converted our great victory into a big defeat and shattered our confidence and courage. The same thing happened in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In the battle of Jassur, the Singhs opposed the Pakistani Army so fiercely that our backbone and foothold were lost.."

Thus the martial history of Sikhs continues in the Indian Army and ever ready to fight for the righteous cause from INDBAT for UN peacekeeping to any enemy which threatens our motherland.
