My first job as a teenager was working for a landlord. It was the most radicalizing experience of my life. Turned me from a conservative to essentially a communist. Here's what happened: https://twitter.com/pwdersno/status/1289560831785541632
First some context: I worked for a large complex owned by a landlord (LL) who owned many properties around the area. Dude was WEALTHY. But on top of that he was born into it. All these properties were built by his dad.
CW: suicide
In my first week I saw a new truck in the lot and asked about it. Turned out a resident killed himself the day before and had no next of kin. The landlord has the truck moved to our lot for a few months so he could use eminent domain to take it. This truck was old

and maybe could resell for a couple thousand at best. No care for the victim dude was just focused on getting that little extra cash. In addition to other abuses of residents his treatment of the employees was horrendous. We had our maintenance head and maybe a dozen of us
By far the 2 hardest working people were "Jose" and "Bob" Both of these guys would go way above and beyond the call to help residents with maintenance. They constantly took work orders and rarely took breaks. Yet they were both paid like $12 an hour. I was taught growing up that
hard work=more money. Yet these 2 guys worked harder than anyone, especially the LL and others known for laziness in the leasing office yet they didn't make more money. That started to shatter that myth for me. Another great person was our maintenance head. She also worked very
hard and was efficient. Every order was done on time and all the needs of the residents were met. They loved her. We loved her. She was also going to school to become a social worker. Our LL made a deal with her so that she could still work almost full time and get out early to
go to school. That all changed when our LL decided to get a new property manager. "Bill" thought he could make the place more efficient. He thought the way to do that was clean house. He told our maintenance head that she had to choose social work or continue working. She
appealed to LL but he backed the property manager which forced her to quit. A number of people actually quit in solidarity with her. Within a few weeks Jose and Bob were both fired for complaining. Over a few years the original crew dwindled to just me and a couple others.
Of course the quality of work suffered and so did the experience of the residents. People started to leave. So rents started to rise, materials became cheaper, relationships suffered. All of this was done by a dude who never worked a day in his life, who when during a rant about
how we weren't weeding enough tried to yank a weed from the ground and physically couldn't. This from a dude who's new property manager jerked off in is office playing sudoku while his failson he'd bring along sometimes tried to start fights with us. This along with other stories
that I won't mention because this thread is too big already revealed how the promises of merit in capitalism are a lie. Everyone should work for a landlord at some time in their life to see behind the bullshit curtain for themselves
