I think the Ellen Show is going to be just fine. Too many white people love her. And white people love accepting apologies for offending behavior that has nothing to do with them. They’re going to turn this into yet another referendum on phantom “cancel culture.” Rinse. Repeat.
We’re going to see all-white panels on cable news shows and morning shows litigating whether we demand too much apology for racism. Then white cisgender gay elders will come out and attribute this to homophobia, specifically Black homophobia. Then Ellen is made in the shade.
And then when she comes back for her first post-COVID live audience show, Ellen will receive a standing ovation and cry as she walks out. Even though she didn’t fucking do anything to address the accusations in the first place. And the behavior will continue, by the way.
I would love to be proven wrong, though. That’d be lovely. But I would like to know exactly where this white fear/resentment of demonstratively punitive consequences for their racism comes from. Because it sure as shit ain’t history/precedent.
Recall that Gabrielle Union was fired at the end of last year by America’s Got Talent/NBC universal for speaking out against instances of racist behavior. Which others corroborated. And NBC universal determined, based on their internal investigation that this was fine.
More often than not, white people *do not* care about/are not offended by racism (unless they’re complaining about “reverse racism”) They don’t care. They don’t care. Guys...they don’t fucking care. If they cared, would we be having this conversation over and over again? Wake up.
To any white people thinking about getting froggy in the replies, I’ll quote Joan from Mad Men.

“Go ahead. Which part is wrong?”
