After checking in and getting his weight (93 lbs!!), we set up Spaulding in a kennel- er, exam room- with some blankets and a bed. He was very curious as to where his mama was.

We place an IV catheter to ensure venous access before, during, and after the procedure. This is also where we give their IV fluids during anesthesia.

He gets his pre-medication, usually an opioid, an anti-anxiety med, and an anti-nausea med. After marinating for 20-30 min, it's time to go! Sometimes they get a little wobbly on the walk to the table

We induce anesthesia with propofol, and once they're asleep we intubate them (put a tube in their windpipe) so we can control their breathing if anything happens. We hook up all the monitors, take xrays of the teeth, and begin scaling off the tartar.
