John Simpson recalls the founding of Schroder Capital Corp. a principal investor in Paul Klein's Computer Television Inc (alongside Zorthian's Time-Life). First person Simpson ran to with his Schrorock idea? Allen Dulles!

Schroder's strong links to Allen Dulles and the CIA (and Nazi industrialists) are documented extensively, so I'll just provide a selection of sources that covers this ground for some background reading. First up from DiEugenio - Destiny Betrayed: JFK, Cuba, and the Garrison Case
Next up from, Berton Hersh - The Old Boys
And finally, Christopher Simpson - Splendid Blond Beast. You can read about the Bush family and Schroder in Russ Baker's "Family of Secrets" and Richard Roberts - "Schroder: Merchants and Bakers" also has relevant historical background on Schroder's intelligence network.
Schroder's CIA ties would make the news again in 1976, not long after Paul had sold his stake in his venture backed by Time/Schroder and returned to NBC.

This connection resurfaced thanks to the very very (very) bizarre espionage case of former CIA employee, Edwin Gibbons Moore
On the official story Moore worked for the CIA from '51-'61, and was fired for allegedly setting fire to his own motel. CIA rehired him in '67 and he shipped to Vietnam, returning after a paranoia diagnosis. He then retired on a disability pension in '73

https://books.google.com/books?id=A8WoNp2vI-cC&pg=PA519&lpg=PA519&dq=%22edwin+gibbons+moore%22&source=bl&ots=olwUv4_lWa&sig=ACfU3U3GjJ6X2llM6iMM3nHvoMxikfwA4w&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi0rtLNsvvqAhU6mHIEHY3VBD44ChDoATAGegQIBxAB#v=onepage&q&f=false
Then in 1976, he dropped a package with sensitive CIA info through the fence of a Soviet residence, offering more in exchange for $200k. The Soviet guard, thinking it could be a bomb, handed it over to Executive Protective Services, and Moore was caught and the plot foiled...
Reading through the reporting of the trial at the time makes it pretty obvious there's much more going on. Starting with the mysterious motel arson that got him fired. Moore testified that the motel was intended to be used as a safe haven for Bay of Pigs operatives
Reports say he was fired after his arson arrest in '61, convicted and retried twice on appeal, the second overturning his conviction. After acquittal, DCI Richard Helms took direct interest in his rehiring and Moore was paid $40K in 'backpay' through Schroder, not the US treasury
Moore's attorney says that the Schroder check is where the CIA drew the line. "When we started asking about it, they clamped a lid down on it. They determined [that] on this one issue, they would not put anyone on the stand." 🤔
Back to Moore. He testified he had been recruited (post-retirement) by a CIA agent, 'Joe' to participate in a covert operation. This is how he got a hold of all the CIA documents.

Moore's testimony suggests some kind of frame-up/rat-fucking
There are signs that the CIA mangled his brain and his own attorneys went for an insanity defense but some of Moore's Joe story was corroborated at trial.

Why was a missing notebook from a CIA safe never reported for 15+ years? Why was he sent a statement cancelling his debt?
Check out the last paragraph quoting the defense psychiatrist: "Joe story might be true, however implausible that sounds... but then the most peculiar things have happened with regards to intelligence services"

What did Crowley know? đź‘€
Apologies for the detour! It's such a spooky case with very tightly guarded Schroder involvement so it caught my interest.

3 years after the CIA drew a check from Schroder Trust to pay Moore $40K, Schroder Capital invested in Paul. "The CIA puts its money where its friends are"
Funny that Schroder Capital Corporation only had that name from Oct 1970 to January 1978.

Computer Television, Inc. lasted from 1970-76
Wasn't Schroder Capital Corp investing money in everything that moved, you ask? There doesn't seem to be any evidence for that from the news reports at the time.

Actually, the only reports on their investments we can find in the news archives are about Computer TV!
This 1972 listing names Capitol Car Distributors and Travelodge International as two of their investments, but these are both carryovers from Schroder Rockefeller before the name change.

"Six major investments in the past two years," of which Paul's Computer Television was one. Three major investments per year doesn't sound like a VC firm that just splashes the cash.

They also say they prefer not to finance start-ups, so I guess they made an exception for Paul
This also gives the impression that Schroder Capital Corporation's dealings were relatively "modest".

Richard Roberts, Schroders: Merchants and Bankers
The pres. of Schroder Capital Corp during the Computer TV years, Stephen Petschek, you guessed it, has a spooktacular bio!

He married the daughter of Truman's War Secretary, Robert Patterson, a leading force behind the CIA's "inaugural covert operation"
After graduating from Harvard Law, Petschek went to Belgium as protégé of US ambassador, William A.M. Burden.

There, a decade prior to investing in Paul Klein, Petschek worked with Burden to depose and "eliminate" Patrice Lumumba.
This link has a collection of quotes from Burden and excerpts from different sources about Burden's leadership and influence in the US coordination of Lumumba's murder.

https://web.archive.org/web/20200804073713/https://patch.com/new-york/upper-west-side-nyc/columbia-university-elimination-patrice-lumumba-revisited-part-1
In March of 1960, Burden took a fateful trip to the Congo with Larry Devlin, the CIA station chief. Accompanying them on this trip? Petschek, naturally (as recalled by Burden in his memoirs Peggy and I).
My guess is that Petschek was recruited while at Harvard. Burden (Vanderbilt descendant) was a Harvard grad, and Devlin, the Congo CIA station chief was recruited during his PhD there.

Burden also makes sure to mention that Petschek was his son's classmate at Harvard.
Dulles, of course was a proud Princeton man, but his friendship with Burden preceded Burden's appointment to Belgium.
Dulles congratulates Burden for a job well done, praising Burden for his contribution to the removal and execution of Patrice Lumumba
When I say Petschek was Burden's protégé, I don't just mean he was Burden's assistant in Belgium. Burden fast-tracked Petschek into many orgs he had influence in.

From CIA publisher Praeger, Petschek is listed as a member of a CFR study group in '64 - Burden was a CFR director
In what's becoming typical of Paul Klein associates, when they're included in a list of names they're often surrounded by hall-of-fame status spies and war criminals

Burden lifts Petschek by his bootstraps:

Petschek appointed to the Board of Directors of Burden's foundation; he was also appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Defense Analyses, where according to General Maxwell Taylor, Burden had a 20 year tenure as chairman.
Doesn't take too much imagination to realize that Petschek's connections to Burden and Allen Dulles likely played a major role in his appointment at Schroder Capital Corporation.
So before career VOA/USIA and head of US PSYOP program in Vietnam, Barry Zorthian, oversaw Time's investment in Paul Klein, it was Schroder Capital Corporation, a subsidiary of Allen Dulles's beloved Schroder that forked out the initial investment.
As Schroder Capital Corp's own copy attests, they were a small outfit with 6 officers that preferred "a close working relationship," which includes "becoming a director or, at least, reserving the right to attend meetings, receive reports, etc."
One of those 6 officers was President Stephen Petschek, a conspirator in the imperialists' liquidation of Lumumba and his gov, and whose career would span leadership roles in leading military/intelligence groups like CFR, IDA and The Aerospace Corporation. But hey, *yawnCIA*
