What to look for in a cloth mask:

I’ll start by saying the WHO technical guidance (using textile science) and some publications are a start, but if we’re going to do this in a smart way and learn about it this advice could/ should change:
1) Fit- quite close to face and covers mouth and nose, when you open your mouth your nose doesn’t poke out (!!!), breath goes through not around mask. Ear loops - not too thick, or short- are easier than ties for many. Adjustable is good. Tailored to fit across nose or wire.
2) 3 layers of fabric, optimally two different fabrics at least with absorbent inner layer, more waterproof outer layer which stays drier, and spunbound (polypropylene) middle layer. I guess a filter pocket could allow you to use own mid layer too.
We need cloth mask makers to step up and show us results like this: https://www.businessinsider.com/the-materials-that-filter-particles-best-in-homemade-masks-testing-2020-4?amp
To be honest though the basic “cough catcher” mask could be poorer quality and maybe still helpful, but people are supposed to not go out sick AT ALL, remember....
If cloth mask quality is higher they *might* protect the wearer some, but we don’t have direct evidence they do so remember to reduce number-duration of noncrucial contacts, #DistanceHandwashMask. Surprisingly large benefit to handwashing- say, 5X day minimum and for cause
No mask faux pas like chin wagging, ear dangling, nose protruding please. Handle the straps to put them on and take them off. Store contained: I’ve seen people use food storage sealable containers, ziplocks, I use an envelope to allow it to dry, not sure what’s best....
But not laying around please!!!
(If you were unwittingly infected the mask could concentrate virus so touching it and then other stuff= ungood. )
Handwash or sanitize after touching please.
Don’t wear it too long when damp (change it out) and warm water-soap wash daily.
Some of this is common sense not evidence based so if you have better sources / different advice please share.
We’re still figuring out how much masks may add in reducing COVID in our communities and doing it “right” offers the best odds of it being helpful.
