i used to wonder how politicians and demagogues past could force a free press to toe their party line and support atrocities like the sedition act, the national recovery act, and other such fascism.

now i know.

they don't have to.

most are falling all over themselves to do it
even in the days before the NYY became "pravda on the hudson" and was still "the newspaper of record" they loved this stuff

they applauded fascism. intellectuals generally do

it's a system that puts them in charge and grants them power to force things on you for your own good
this is seductive stuff to the denizens of the ivory tower and self proclaimed guardians of truth and rightness.

it allows them to cast their own arrogant instincts to dominate others as "duty" and "leadership."

it transmutes a sense of narcissistic superiority into virtue.
and it excuses all manner of appalling sins

the NYT above is engaging in a staggering set of gaslighting and self serving mendacity.

"the problem in the US is that our dying, hyper-partisan rag is not being recognized as the the beacon of absolute truth as it rightfully should"
this seems to be a whole new line of attack emerging from the fascist left: that everyone else is disinformation, that you must "trust the experts" and that "only we know who the experts are and what they say". https://twitter.com/boriquagato/status/1288971903114280961?s=20
this is how totalitarianism works.

politicize everything and create a minefield of entangled duty and virtue according to some schematic that only you, the secular priesthood of right-thinking thought leaders, can decipher and interpret for the grubby masses.

it's a clericy.
it's a grab for power and move to cast those who oppose this grab as luddites and liars.

we are truth. they are propaganda. then you spew propaganda.

it's the stunning big lie of goebbells wrapped in the soothing balm of "just believe me and you can join the anointed"
it's a dog whistle calling you to join a certain kind of herd and bask in the satisfaction of your superiority for getting it right and submitting.

it is a siren song of social submission and it's where truth, basic justice, and individual rights go to die.
