whats happening in zimbabwe right now.🇿🇼
black lives matter, have mattered and will always matter. please take time to read this thread as black lives in zimbabwe need our attention. it's sickening the lack of media coverage on whats happening there but hopefully this can educate
zimbabwe has been under the rule of one majority party since 1980; zanu pf. following the coup and death of robert mugabe (a dictator of nearly 40 years) and ‘democratic’ election of now president emmerson mnangagwa, many had hopes of a new prosperous zimbabwe.
but, due to the destructive, oppressive and corrupt leadership of this government, it is now suffering a humanitarian crisis.
in jan 2019, the govt cut off internet for its citizens, blocking them off from the rest of the world. this was in response to protests against rises in fuel prices which harmed rural and poor communities. this violation restricted freedom of speech and disconnected families.
in may 2020, 3 female activists who oppose zanu were abducted from prison, sexually assaulted, tortured by police. although this was reported on international news nothing was done.
in june 2020,the zanu government ruled that they had lied about the police torture they experienced and justice was never served. they are still needing care for their injuries and their lives are forever changed. their names are CECILIA CHIMBIRI, NETSAI MAROVA and JOANAH MAMOBE.
july 30th 2020, multiple activists have been arrested due to government crackdowns and increased ‘security measures’. the zanu govt has a history of disappearing their opposition and any that critise them.
among the targeted and currently arrested are: tsitsi dangarembga - an award winning novelist, muzingaye thaka – a conservationist and school teacher, tawanda muchechiwa – a research assistant and activist
they were arrested july 2020. they are still being held! unlawfully!
the world food programme is warning that zimbabwe is on the verge of a starvation crisis and the un is calling for international support in combatting this. soldiers have been deployed to quash anti government protests due to lockdown measures but they are hurting civilians.
i love love LOVE my country and my countrymen. and so this disgusting lack of food, healthcare, jobs, economic security and freedom and violation of human rights upsets me greatly. on the 40th anniversary of independence things must change.
