1) Lack of options for TikTok: Amid growing concerns about Tik Tok sharing data of Americans with the Chinese Govt, Donald Trump wants to follow the Indian govt's suit and ban Tik Tok. If this goes thru the value of Tik Tok US business can very well come down to zero!
So, if ByteDance (Tik Tok's parent) can sell off the US business, they can at least make some money. Something is better than nothing...
2) Negligible bidders: The US Congress is keen on breaking up (into smaller companies) Google, FB, Amazon, Apple, as they are getting too big in their respective businesses. So, none of these tech giants would want to acquire Tik Tok and come out much bigger than they already are
So, Microsoft has virtually no competition for this deal.
