it's been seven months since tros came out and i am still so mad about the costumes i could throw something

of course im mad about the whole movie but im SPECIALLY mad about the costumes. had em all in like, hot topic quality looking, thin, polyester shit. spirit halloween couture. HATE EM

we could have had kylo ren in literally anything else but "TLJ outfit only with a cape with a hood now and the exact same helmet hot glued together by a literal chimpanzee with a sparkly red glue gun" and YET. AND. YET.

rey in "just her normal first outfit except oxycleaned bright white"... i wanted to like you. i stuck up for you in the costume group. why did you betray me. why

there is no practical point to wearing bright fucking white if you're rey. none. you're telling me that a half feral dirt goblin who probably bathes in sand and eats soap wears bright fucking white now and for what

costumes are supposed to reflect characterization or changes, that's what they did in THE TWO OTHER FUCKING FILMS maybe i was giving jj too much credit for tfa but like, rey's hair and clothes are holdovers from her childhood bc she's hoping her parents will return

kylo's costume in tfa is very heavy and multilayered (like his character) and "don't touch me, only my face is exposed even when the helmet's off, throat covered, I'm trying to be a terror" with a dash of menacing mystic added by the hood and shawl

then in tlj Rey changes into heavier, thicker, more practical fabrics on Ahch-To as she starts exploring herself and looking inward, and Kylo's costume gets slightly less layered, shorter (surcoat/tunic instead of robes) and exposes more throat (vulnerability?)

until at the end she's in darker grays and browns to reflect her inner conflict and her hair is down to express her acceptance of her adulthood/maturity, letting go of her childhood, and Kylo's lost his cape and smashed his helmet: he exposes as much of his true desires as we--

--have ever seen him be open about-- he's open in his costume and open in what he wants where Rey's concerned, but regresses back to the layer of the cape when mounting the assault on the Resistance during the battle of Crait. Then, he loses it again when he fights Luke--

because he's exposing his wants again, this time a desire to destroy the uncle who failed him. And this vulnerability is his downfall, too: Luke is nothing but an apparition and he loses the Resistance as they escape through the mountains. Back on goes the cape for the last scene

where he sees Rey one last time, and she rejects him.

THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME COSTUME CHANGES HAVE BEEN A THING IN STAR WARS EITHER, THE PREQUELS ARE A THING YOU KNOW

padme's costumes are a whole different thread and Anakin gets progressively darker as he turns to the dark side, while Obi-Wan stays pretty much the same.

BUT THEN IN RISE OF SKYWALKER THEY DROPPED THE MOTHERFUCKING BALL.

Rey should have been in anything but white. Light gray, brown, tan, whatever. I prefer literally all of the concept art over what we got but I would have loved to see a mashup with some Resistance themes as she scavenges, like, an old jacket or a pair of pants. Come ON.

Even if you take the plot we got and say "cool," Rey is still struggling with her sense of identity and her place as a Jedi. Putting her in brown would have been a fine nod to Bastila Shan and the yellow saber, putting her in gray would have been a nod to her inner struggle.

And Kylo Ren is now the fucking Supreme Leader of the goddamn First Order and you're telling me that bitch wouldn't have sprung for at LEAST something more like his OG costume because he's ~putting his guard back up~ and not trusting anyone again, ever? Or a mix of both old & new

Imagine seeing him in something like this minus the helmet (because fuck that helmet) for 80% of the movie only to see him come out of nowhere as Ben Solo in that flappy ass giant shirt. God.

and my beef doesn't lie with JUST THEM EITHER. Poe looks like an indiana jones halloween costume. Finn looks like he's cosplaying Han Solo. Kaydel looks like she's wearing the Hot Topic TROS collection i mean COME ON THAT JACKET IS THE THICKNESS OF A BEDSHEET

Finn could have been in a bomb fucking bright yellow bomber jacket with actual STYLE. Poe could have had a BEARD. and you gave us NOTHING. FOR WHAT. WHY.

tldr the costumes of tros sucked so bad and i hate them the end
