No one killed Sushant.
No one killed Jessica.
This is the headline that was carried on Times of India front page on February 22, 2006 after the trial court acquitted all the 9 accused due to lack of sufficient evidence.
Journalists protested like this.
Then history was made.
Will history repeat itself?
I wanted to remind you all of the Jessica Lall case where a big politician's son turned out to be the killer. The politicians turned their best to protect their own. They threatened witnesses, evidences vanished and journalists were bribed to write in favour of the murderer.
But.
People didn't stop asking for justice. They took to the streets. They sent letters to media houses. They organised candle-light marches. Those days there were no social media but the relentless protests forced the media to wake up.
Once that happened, things took a positive turn.
In that case too the family kept their quiet initially but then they couldn't bear it any longer and finally, spoke out. They lodged a case and appealed to the media for help.
Same here.
Sushant's family grieved quietly but now, they have come out and sought justice for him.
At that time too the case took a political turn. Some political leaders tried to save the murderer while another political party took it upon themselves to support the cause.
But that didn't divide people. They kept on protesting. They screamed until their voices were heard.
In the Jessica Lal case, there was tampering of evidence and the bullet was not matching the revolver.
A former Bollywood actor who was called as a witness, turned hostile in the court.
Later on, after being caught in a sting operation, he admitted that he was lying in the court.
During the Jessica Lal case some journalists never lost sight of the case even though politicians & senior lawyers got involved. Day after day, news channels demanded justice. People outraged. It became an election issue too with many pointing fingers at a party.
Much like today.
It took 300 days.
After relentless protests & media reports, the High Court overturned the verdict.
Journalists back then were less corrupt. Many were neutral. Journalism was more important to them than ideology.
Not like today when their ideology is more important than news
If you stay on course, justice will be served.
There is no channel, no website, no newspaper who can dare go against its consumers.
They will try to misguide you, they will try propaganda, they will tell lies but ultimately they will give in.
So, never give up.
