Leadership is incredibly rewarding but can also be challenging. A few thoughts to those of you picking up these roles. 1/10 https://twitter.com/AnthonySmithVP/status/1289475014484344833
Lead through your personal and institutional values; if you are asked to do something that doesn’t feel right, ask questions. Why do we need to do it this way? But accept that sometimes things can’t be perfect. 2/
Build a team which you empower and then delegate to them. You can’t do everything yourself. Play to people’s strengths, and accept that not everyone can do everything. 3/
Create a solution-focused culture. If there is a problem, what can we do to address it? Get these solutions from diverse voices. Encourage creativity. 4/
Be honest and transparent; including when needing to challenge problems - supportive, solution-focused but honest. 5/
Praise everyone who delivers against objectives. Almost everything in academia is team work - praise the team. And give specific praise to individuals who go the extra mile. 6/
Set long term objectives, that sit above the day-to-day activities, and put time aside every few weeks to audit progress against these. 7/
Don’t micromanage. 8/
Get 360 reviews yearly. Ask the wider community with whom you work to provide constructive feedback to you. Accept the feedback and also accept that you can’t address all of it 9/
Enjoy it! It is a privilege to be allowed to take this level of responsibility and to be the steward of something so important. It will be exhausting, challenging but overall extremely rewarding. /10 (Good luck!)
