For all the incessant talk of 'British values' and integration as tools of 'cohesion', Johnson's rhetoric, and his govt's decisions during the pandemic have underlined more than ever that white supremacy remains normative in UK politics and society. 'We are all in this together' simply doesn't hold when communities are exceptionalised, both implicitly and explicitly by state policy and rhetoric from politicians. Paternalistic pronouncements suggesting lack of responsibility, commitment or even understanding w/in minority...
..communities are rife from politicians and commentators. To then pass the buck on to 'community leaders' who are supposedly keeping their flocks in check is somewhat duplicitous - these same community leaders who are excluded from policy discussions are then expected to shoulder
responsibility for their supposedly monolithic 'communities'' adherence to sudden directives - pointedly announced at the start of #eid - with no consideration into how families can cope in the circumstances.
This is the same government which urges us to 'eat out to help out', and to simply 'open a window' as we employ cleaners and carers in family homes. The absence of any suggested solutions with the announcement of restrictions in the north of England betrays that policy...
continues to be formulated with white, middle class families in mind. Lets be real, gesturing towards community leaders to cascade&enforce messaging is the govt's way of pushing the square peg of its policy into a round hole of diverse communities that it was not formulated for.
If we are all really in this together, why are intermediaries even needed? or is this an admission from Johnson that some communities are not fully part of the 'cohesive' nation that is 'fighting' covid together?
This is 💯‘have your cake and eat it’ colonial politics at play. Authentic grassroots community activism and leadership already plugs many gaps left by govt negligence and indifference. Yet rather than supporting and recognising, the state sidelines it, only then to intimate ..
that such leaderships bear responsibility for keeping their communities in check and ensuring they abide by insensitively expressed and unclear messaging.
