Summer night 2014. I drive a friend home after a party to her house in north La Verne. I walk her to her door and get something from my trunk. Neighbors call the cops on the “suspicious stranger” looking in their trunk. I’m pulled over, not a mile from my house. #WeAreLaVerne

Spring 2013. A friend’s parent laughs while she says she’s glad I’m “not that kind of Mexican”. #WeAreLaVerne

Spring 2014. Another student says that my Ivy League acceptances are “only because I’m Mexican.” I graduate as valedictorian the following month. #WeAreLaVerne
