a jeonghan vocal appreciation thread —

i feel like the versatility of jeonghan as a vocalist isn’t talked about enough. his voice is truly one of a kind - it’s unique, has it’s own colour and tone and just really stands out.

he’s not your typical “powerful” vocalist, but the way he’s able to put so much emotion into his lines makes them so powerful in their own way.
falling for u is where you can really hear the beauty of jeonghan’s vocal timbre. it allows his distinct, soft and airy voice to shine and is set in his ideal vocal range. the relaxed vibe of the song means he can focus mainly on the vocals and showcase the beauty of his voice.
i talk a lot about pitch (comes from me having perfect pitch and being bothered when things are slightly out of tune) and yjh honestly has such good pitch. i’m not how he does it, but he’s basically perfectly in tune all the time.
even when he starts singing completely out of nowhere, he’s somehow always able to hit the notes perfectly it really amazes me.
in this performance of thanks you can really see the power that yjh is capable of putting into his voice. he also pours so much emotion into his part which is able to bring about even more power.
yjh is able to hold his pitch while singing in falsetto. it’s usually quite easy to go off pitch in falsetto but he manages to stay really in tune. his voice also keeps his soft and almost slightly husky timbre while giving him a unique and recognisable falsetto voice.
i’m a strong advocate for yjh rapping. not in such a way where he’s able to spit some fire bars, but in the way that he has a really good sense of rhythm and flow. when he raps it doesn’t feel awkward at all and he’s able to match to the beat of the instrumental so well.
yjh’s rap-sing in clap provides us with a new colour to his voice. it’s contrasted to his usual soft/airy voice and is very different to what we normally get from him. his part is more rhythmic and he creates a stronger, almost “nasally” sound in this lower register.
fear and fearless were what gave us yjh’s fatal soft whisper. i would honestly just describe these lines of his as haunting. i felt goosebumps the first time i heard them. they were breathy, quiet, almost hesitant and just so emotionally powerful.
i feel like pinwheel embodies yjh’s ideal vocal range. he thrives in basically everything from low range to falsetto, but this range really gives his voice the effortless ability to capture the atmosphere wz was trying to create. it’s soft, breathy, yet strong at the same time.
there’s just something about the way in which yjh sings hug that carries so much emotion and really touches your heart. it’s in the lower register where he’s usually very strong, but he brings out his softer, more delicate vocals to really convey the emotions of the song.
kidult proves that you don’t have to have a lot of lines in a song to make a lasting impact. the way yjh pours so much emotion into his voice really makes it go straight to the heart. it’s honestly the perfect emotional line for him.
if we want to talk about impact, we need to talk about yjh’s pre-chorus line in call call call. he’s voice still has his usual softness, but he creates this build up in power. each of his lines is more powerful than the next and it leads nicely straight into the chorus.
nothing much else to say other than jeonghan singing his heart out with his angelic voice💕
there’s a certain swag and confidence in yjh’s voice during his opening line from left and right. it creates a new vibe which hasn’t really been heard from him before.
this is honestly the perfect opening to a song and the perfect line for jeonghan and the perfect match for his vocal timbre and perfect in every way and did i mention this is perfect?
there’s something about jeonghan’s beautiful angelic voice and our dawn is hotter than day opening which really tugs at my heartstrings and makes me feel so many different emotions at once.
in home, we get yjh singing in the high register, but this time he constantly switches between his real voice and falsetto. he has a way of switching between these voices which is so effortlessly smooth. the transition doesn’t feel forced and he’s also able to retain his pitch.
i had to include his favourite line and it’s honestly such a beautiful falsetto line. yjh has a way of being able to create different vibes in falsetto. if we compare to home and thanks, his line in don’t wanna cry is more “clear” and carries a lot more emotional depth.
i could probably keep this thread going with every single line of his but for the sake of me not falling even more behind with classes i will temporarily stop :’) might add more to this in the future when i’m feeling particularly strong about a line of his :)
i forgot about us, again bc it’s the line that reduces me to tears every time i listen to it. so i think that already says enough about the impact of this :’)
in habit we really get to see yjh's ability in controlling his voice and how he builds up his lines. he knows exactly what to emphasise, where to taper off, gradually add power to his part and the way he switches between his real voice and falsetto is really so beautiful.
i think yjh has truly found his vocal colour. he really took the time to create this vibe of comfort and understanding by adjusting the airyness of his voice. even though the lyrics are more on the “sad” side, he makes us feel less alone.
he’s really showcasing his technique and knowledge of music. his singing is rhythmic, but not in such a way that is stiff - it flows gently in sync with the guitar. instead of hitting the notes straight away, he slides into them helping him create the vibe
predebut yjh already had the making of a great vocalist. of course, he improved vastly over the years, but if you listen to the second half, he already had so much power in his voice. we also see the beginning of his smoooth, effortless real voice to falsetto transition.
putting these songs side by side shows how far yjh has come since his trainee days. he started off sounding hesitant, but he’s really grown more confident in his voice - you can just hear the air of maturity when he sings now. a truly beautiful journey.

yjh has a very stable lower range. even in this pre-debut video, you can tell that he has the ability to put power into his voice in this lower register. his voice is so pure and clean and you can really see the potential of what his voice can do. he simply just sounds angelic❤️
