I feel. Ugh. Like every year that we manage to end a #HugoAwards saying "yes! Progress!" we follow it up with three more 'what the fuck' years. And I *get it*, that's the whole battle, but like. It would've been so easy to fix and this was *the year* to be so much more accessible
So many folks who don't normally go to worldcon or the #HugoAwards for travel and cost reasons got the chance to go this year with that barrier removed.

And this is what we gave them. Old white men praising other old white men for the glory days of being selectively oppressive
We gave all those new potential voters, fancritics, writers, artists, ALL OF THEM, gatekeeping & derision. The #HugoAward voters continue to be future-facing while the loudest voices & structures around them cling white-knuckled to the past.
So what do those of us who hate it DO?
What we always do, Pinky — pick up the mantle and trudge onwards. We vote, and we yell, and we bang the drum, and we keep lifting up the marginalized and dismissed among us for the #HugoAwards
because on a night like tonight, in the year of our lord 2020, one of — arguably — the most recognizable names in the genre couldn't be assed to learn the names of Black and brown * #HugoAwards NOMINEES* & isn't that just the poster child for the whole fucking problem.
So eventually I'm gonna go back to #Booktube and talk about the books I love with the people who love them too and maybe one day the #HugoAwards will get it and until then I have cake I'm gonna eat
