mmmm might delete my "latinx" thread bc I feel like I didn't word it well bc I was emotional so it's oversimplified and it flattens the experiences of a lot of people in more marginalized communities whose experiences are erased in the construction of latine/latinx/etc
yeah I think I'm gonna. Maybe I'll repost it in a more thoughtful form later
the tl;dr of it was:
1. White non-latinxs did not make up the term "latinx". Latinxs from Puerto Rico and the US popularized the term to describe their own experiences

2. "Latinx" is problematic in some ways but "latine" is problematic in the same ways in that they both-
perpetuate harmful concepts of hegemonic "latinidad"

3. Latinx as a term is important to some people due to its political origins and its explicit rejection of gender/the binary. you can read more about it if you Google it.
here are some examples of people explaining why "latinx" works for them. As I've said I have major issues with concepts of latinidad/latinx-ness but insisting that everyone should use "latine" strengthens the more harmful aspects of latinidad and furthers its hegemonic nature
