Growing up I learned the story of Jackie Robinson and his teammate Peewee Reese. Jackie broke the colour barrier in 1947. Jackie was the victim of the most inhumane treatment that included racial slurs and segregation. It was an impossible existence, but Jackie persevered.
One game, while being screamed at by fans, Peewee ran over from shortstop and put his arm around Jackie. The crowd shut up. It was a simple and easy thing for Peewee to do, but it helped. The 2020 example of this is white teammates taking a knee in solidarity.
Black and indigenous communities are victim to systemic mistreatment by state actors. Racism is still very alive. The very least a person of privilege can do is offer real and ongoing support to those from disenfranchised communities. #BlackLivesMatter .
When I think about the best and most meaningful moments in sports, it's really just stories like Jackie and Peewee.
So powerful seeing @NBA take a knee during the anthem. I hope the @NHL does too, because it will be on the right side of history.
