A short thread....

The Sibanda clan name was used by the BaTau people who trace their their origin from the Swazi. The BaTau clan totem is a lion. Other baTau of the Sibanda clan use Sebata. The founding father of BaTau was known as Kgoshi Ngwato.
2. King Mzilikazi conquered the BaTau near modern day Pretoria when they were under the leadership of Kgoshi Matlebo. After the defeat those who escaped settled in the area now known as Sekhukhune in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.
3. The BaTau who were rounded up & assimilated in King Mzilikazi's society were incorporated into the uMgoqo regiment under a moTau general called Nkatiwo Sibanda. Nkatiwo Sibanda became a general of note trusted by King Mzilikazi.
4. After the establishment of the Ndebele state by King Mzilikazi, many people from various ethnic groups with the lion totem who were assimilated or under the influence of the Ndebele state adopted the Sibanda clan name as well.
