what is aave and why you should stop using it as a white person: a thread!!
let me begin with: im not black! everything i say is based on resources i found online, same goes for the examples shown. please do correct me if anything is wrong and always feel free to add
what is aave?
aave is an acronym for African American Vernacular English. aave was born out of the - horrifically ugly - history of slavery in the united states. people from different cultures and languages were torn from their homelands and sold into chattel slavery.

those who were enslaved invented their own separate version of english to speak to each other forming unity, identity and communication without interference from white enslavers - aave.
why it’s wrong for you - as a white person - to use aave.
aave is criticized for not sounding like "proper english." when black people use aave, they may be denied jobs, access to institutions of higher education and/or otherwise judged as speaking in an "uneducated" way.

the end result is that black people regularly have to self-police their use of aave in order to survive, while white people can toggle back and forth freely without having to worry about the consequences.
besides that, when aave is used by white people in verbal dialogue, and on social media as "internet or twitter slang", it erases it& #39;s origin, while commodifying parts of black culture.
in pop culture, aave is - more often than it should - used by white people for social capital. due to it& #39;s social influence, it& #39;s often used in an attempt to be relevant, relatable, or for credibility. aave is also often used in a “mocking” manor or used exaggeratedly.

seems familiar? that’s your "twitter slang" and "gen z language" as misused by non-black people. it may be hard to identify which terms are really just internet slang and what is aave, but the examples above and a quick google search can help!
when white people use aave, it can feed into a culture of appropriation. they can use aave or other methods of black cultural expression when it benefits them and taking it off before retreating back to privilege.
please take this information and share it. inform and educate others when you see that they& #39;re using aave as non-black people. and last but not least, if a black person tells you that you using aave is offensive to them, apologize and try not to use it any longer. that’s all!
a quick correction! i stated ,,white people” a lot, as so in the title, but this is also directed at non-black poc!
another quick add on, it never is and never will be my intention to speak over or for black people! my only goal here is spreading awareness and educating! im sorry if any of you felt like i was overstepping, i truly am.

with this thread i tried to use my privilege as a white person for the good. because unfortunately some people only seem to listen when a non-black is speaking. my intentions were never to use such a topic as this for viral popularity, or trying to speak for the black community
