That reminds me: I was proud to support @jeremycorbyn as a British Jew. I never thought I was at risk of antisemitism and I believed his policies would have really benefitted the poor and disabled. But my Jewishness was questioned by Corbyn's opponents. https://twitter.com/avengah/status/1289276533211791360
Some anti-Corbyn groups claimed to speak for British Jews. Jews with different opinion either had Jewishness challenged or were silenced with antisemitism allegations (Jews, antisemitic? Yeah, it became that ridiculous.) But assuming all Jews think the same is itself antisemitic!
I wonder if @jeremycorbyn would have been better avoiding the Israel/Palestine issue. Nothing an opposition party can do unless elected. If his campaign had focused on British issues, his opponents would have had less to attack. Too long campaigning on Palestine alienated some.
Opponents used it against him; more fuel for antisemitism allegations. If he had instead stuck to British issues and avoided discussing I&P, he wouldn't have risked alienating some groups, and might have reduced antisemitism allegations as a whole by avoiding discussing Israel.
While many feel strongly about Israel and Palestine, many Brits are more concerned with things affecting their lives personally, so excessive foreign policy talk could have alienated them too. But if he'd won power, that would have been the best time to discuss it without risk.
The Board of Deputies claims to represent all British Jews. But over half this country's Jews are secular, with no connection to a synagogue and nothing to do with the Board or any other organised Jewish group. Therefore the Board can only represent a minority - less than half.
So they're lying when they claim to speak for ALL Jews. Combined with their habit of silencing dissent, they reek of totalitarian thought police. We are not a hive mind. We are not in lockstep. I don't care about Israel, it doesn't concern me. And I'm a lifelong atheist.
The point is always question these self-appointed representative groups' legitimacy. On the same token, Jewish Labour Movement always called Jewish Voice for Labour a small, fringe group. But if I wanted to join one, JVL would be my choice - they supported @jeremycorbyn fully.
@JVoiceLabour Thought I'd draw your attention to this thread. Some of us secular Jews hated the things done in our people's name by self-appointed spokespeople and unelected representatives.
