The Original LG5: A thread.
After Releasing Cheek to Cheek with Tony Bennet in 2014 and doing a supporting tour, Gaga starred on the 5th Season Of American Horror Story, “Hotel”.
She starred as “the countess” one of the main antagonists of the season for which she received critical acclaim from peers and reviewers alike. The role earned Gaga her first Golden Globe and inspired her to dive into the world of darkness again (she wrote a vampire poem in 2014)
During and After the filming and release of the season, Gaga confirmed and teased her working on her upcoming album. She gave an interview in which she said her role on American Horror Story: Hotel would inspire her new album (LG5) and bring her back into "the art of darkness."
“I ended up getting emotional here, because I went back to something that I believed in a lot, which is the art of darkness. Not everyone understands, but for people who believe that, there is a real connection between us, it is a language in itself, ”said Gaga about AHS.
Ever since the beginning of 2015, Gaga teased and posted pictures of her and long time collaborator Redone together in the studio working on music.
It was confirmed that Redone made 8 tracks with Gaga, one being Angel Down, and another titled “Frankenstiened” Gaga continuously talked about the art of darkness being on her album.
Several other collaborators were also rumored including Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, Elton John and maybe Adele meaning there were some disco influences going on with her music.
It was clear Gaga had been working with Nile Rodgers as in October of the same year Gaga took part in Tom Ford’s promotional advertisement which featured her cover of Chic’s “I want your love”.
Some of the topics speculated to be featured in the album involved darkness, vampires, mythical beings and a “chaos angel” which Gaga teased a lot as well as the overall theme of Chaos.
At the British Fashion Awards in November of 2015, which Gaga attended, British Singer Lilly Allen revealed that Mark Ronson had cancelled a studio session with her because she would be working with Gaga the next day.
Gaga and Mark Ronson began working together even more and made several public appearances. We do know that Joanne, other than Angel Down, didn’t exist until late 2016, when Gaga and Mark Ronson spent 6 months coming up with the concept of the album and writing the music.
However the album “Joanne” and the theme of family was still not settled on in early 2016 and Gaga kept on working with Redone, as Elton John said that the album was a return to her old roots sounding like Bad Romance and You and I with some dark and disco influences.
On January 6, 2016, a mysterious video was released by the technology company Intel in which they announced a creative collaboration with Lady Gaga for that year's Grammy Awards, which would culminate with a performance on the stage of the event.
Gaga already teased a pop album with influences from disco and funk music through her statements and collaborators. Rumors began to surface that the LG5 lead single would be released shortly before the Grammys, to present it at the ceremony using the Intel technology.
Gaga continued serving dark visuals, both through public appearances and instances like the V99 Magazine which was titled “gaga’s fashion guard” meaning that the theme of “darkness” and inspiration she took from “the countess” was still very much alive.
On January 16th 2016, Gaga earned her first golden globe for AHS however hours after the ceremony it was confirmed that David Bowie had passed away. Bowie’s death had a HUGE impact on Gaga and this was truly when the original themes and songs for LG5 would begin to shift.
The Grammy’s asked Gaga to perform a tribute act to honour Bowie, for which she scrapped her original performance (rumored to be the lead of LG5) for a tribute using Intel’s technology for hollograms, robotics and computer graphics as well as performing with Nial Rodgers.
Gaga then began extensively performing and promoting “til it happens to you” an oscar nominated song she wrote with Dianne Warren for the documentary about r*pe in college campuses “the hunting ground”
Right after the oscar performance of the song, Gaga felt that she needed to create a more personal and intimate album which is when we can guess that the “original LG5” was no more and she invited Mark Ronson to be an executive producer on the album.
Mark ronson in the picture, the death of her idol, her split from her long time fiancé and family trauma all caused “LG5” to be scrapped and “Joanne” to be born. Allegedly “Chaos Angel” was reworked into the song “Angel Down”.
In June of 2016, RedOne said that they had originally chosen a lead single for the album, but plans had changed. It seemed that the concept was secured and there were multiple tracks prepared (Which is why there would be a lead single chosen), but it was never sent to the label.
RedOne also confessed that he didn’t know where she was at musically anymore, and that the music they made together was amazing. Later he told an interviewer that she wanted to go a more “country” route with the album.
During the Joanne Era, fans said Gaga sang them a snippet of “frankensteined” from the original LG5 backstage at the Joanne world Tour and Redone began talking about the track.
This fueled rumours that Gaga would be releasing a “Joanne B-Side” with songs from the original LG5 but the project never saw the light of day.
