Remembering the 'Father of India's Unrest', and the first pan-India political leader of the independence struggle - 'Lokmanya' Bal Gangadhar Tilak, on his 100th Punyatithi.

Tilak passed away on August 1, 1920 in Mumbai. Lakhs gathered for his funeral at Chowpatty.

"Tilak, says Kelkar, had a touch of malaria when he left Pune for Mumbai on July 12, 1920 to end an urgent legal matter pending before the Bombay high court.

As was his practice, he checked into Sardar Gruha, his favourite abode in Mumbai..."
"A week later a tired Tilak went on a long drive...That, says Kelkar, compounded the matter and Tilak was down with pneumonia. Ten days later the lion of Pune, was no more."

(Note: Tilak was suffering from diabetes and his health had worsened during his 6 years in Mandalay Jail)
"Mumbaikars braved heavy showers to catch a final glimpse of of the departed leader..."

"There were many popular demonstrations along the route. A special train conveying a large number of people from Poona arrived in Bombay in time for the funeral." https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/mumbai-bal-gangadhar-tilaks-life-and-times-to-be-revisited-on-100th-death-anniversary/articleshow/77177439.cms
