Faculty at the @uaccn received this email from their dean yesterday directing instructors with children to consider quitting their jobs so that @UofAlabama can hire replacements.
This directive is heinous. Faculty and staff are entitled to 12 weeks of Emergency Family and Medical Leave. This is a federal law that specifically provides for paid leave for workers whose children are out of school due to the virus.
NO ONE should resign their position. @UofAlabama must rescind this directive, which clearly attempts to subvert federally protected benefits for workers.
It is the responsibility of @UofAlabama and @uaccn to provide legally mandated benefits to its workers. The threats of replacement in this email are coercive and unethical. Once again, UA is putting the responsibility of dealing with the pandemic on its most vulnerable workers.
Nurses are heroes until they have children, then they need to go on unemployment so that the university can plow ahead with its plans for in person instruction. This is inexcusable.
Summary of the federally protected paid leave benefits Dean Prevost is attempting to circumvent. This us @UofAlabama's own HR fact sheet!
