I know I’m going to get plenty of hate for what I’m about to say, but everyone needs a reality check when it comes to #shanedawson. Thread in the comments.
For context, I have been a fan of Shane’s since 2017. And I was unaware of his inappropriate content from 10 years ago as I have not seen every video he’s ever made, nor have I listened to his podcast. Without a doubt, the inappropriate jokes and behavior (that I did see/hear
in the midst of everything that’s been going on) are absolutely inappropriate and in poor taste and I don’t support any of it. Given that information, I have a few things to say about this situation:
1.I would bet at least half of you who have now resigned yourselves to bullying Shane now are the same people who were laughing at those same inappropriate jokes/behavior 10 years ago. It’s incredibly hypocritical and ironic. You are engaging in the “herd” mentality – because
it’s cool to hate Shane, you’ve decided to jump on the bandwagon. This is no different when it was cool to hate James Charles over a year ago and bullied that poor (19-year-old) kid to almost the brink of suicide. The same thing is happening here.
2. @shanedawson apologized and was explaining himself. He said there were “no excuses” for what he did in the past. You can accept the apology, or not. It’s completely up to you. You can unsubscribe, throw out any merch you own and choose to not engage in anything that would
support him in any way and leave it there. You don’t need to bully, attack or other wise call someone a “pedophile” when they have not been charged AND convicted of any sex crimes related to children and no one has come forward to say that Shane Dawson sexually assaulted them,
or any other kind of physical assault, for that matter. It’s also completely disgusting that other channels are making money off of this – even creating the illusion that there’s a pending investigation from law enforcement, which there is not – it was fabricated by another
YouTuber: Sanders Kennedy, for those of you who are unaware of the situation.
http://3.How"> http://3.How  would it feel if someone took something you did 8-10 years ago and held it over your head for the rest of your life? It would be shitty, and it would be unfair – Shane’s content has been unproblematic for an extended period of time.
I don’t recall anything racist or sexually questionable in recent years. It’s truly unfair to define someone by their mistakes in the past. I think if all of us were judged by some dumb shit we did when we were 20, most of us wouldn’t have jobs, normal lives, etc.
People make stupid mistakes, they say/do dumb shit for shock value, attention, or use it as an unhealthy method for coping. Which brings me to my fourth point…
4. As a survivor of childhood sexual assault, I understand that everyone handles their healing process differently, sometimes in healthy ways and sometimes in not so healthy ways. I’ve definitely utilized both in my own life, which did include some very inappropriate humor
that I shared amongst my family and friends. When you joke about things that are horrible and traumatic, it makes it feel less upsetting and traumatic. I do understand that I didn’t post my jokes on YouTube for the world to experience and possibly trigger other survivors of
sexual abuse who do not choose that style of coping, nor appreciate that subject matter being made into a joke, or a series of jokes. I don’t condone any of Shane’s past behavior, but I do think I understand the place from which it was coming from since Shane is also a survivor
of sexual abuse. There’s no doubt in my mind that he should have and could have handled his pain differently and should have been more mindful; I’m definitely not disputing that.
5.He’s a fucking human, he fucked up – multiple times and in multiple ways, but guess what? So have you, so have I and so has everyone. No one deserves to be bullied or tortured for past mistakes. You don’t have to forgive him, but damn, stop bullying him –
no doubt he’s contemplated or is contemplating suicide as a result of all of this. Is all this hate really worth a human life?
